Have you ever thought about running a marathon?

NOW IS YOUR CHANCE… NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED!

Just thinking about running a half or full marathon can be overwhelming. Where do you even start? Don’t worry, we are here to help! Runners Lane’s marathon training group is starting up again in June. Join us and we will get you ready for the Santa Clarita Marathon this November or the LA marathon next year – or both!

  • Our training group is completely free and open to all levels, from beginners to seasoned runners.
  • Join us on weekly runs and run or walk at your own pace.
  • Get access to a training plan that will prepare you for a full or half marathon.
  • Ask questions and get answers from people with experience.
  • Get invaluable tips, hints, and encouragement along the way, from feedback on your running form to nutrition to running gear, and more.

I did not believe that I could do a marathon, but the members of the RL marathon training group believed for me when I could not see it. My goal was to do a 1/2, and then you all said I could do more. The group built me up when I was down, and gave me the opportunity to motivate others… who would think a middle aged overweight woman could motivate others to exercise and run?” – Lorraine Solomon

“Bad back, bad knees, multiple sclerosis, and a host of other issues and this 48 year old guy was training for his first marathon. I never even had the desire to watch 5 minutes of a marathon but for some reason this group inspired me to do what most people can’t even begin to think about. I learned so much about myself and the mental games we all play with ourselves in order to stay in our little comfort zones.” – Matt Malles

“I am fairly new to the sport, with maybe 4 years of running and really running 3-5 miles was my longest run prior to joining Runners Lane. We followed your advice and we were much better prepared this year than last year for the marathon.” – Karla Solano

Follow our Facebook page and stay up to date on the RL Marathon Training Group’s activities!

Still not sure? Join us on June 6 as we kick off our training group with a Good Form Running Clinic. It is free and you will NOT regret it!

Build your lungs and heart so you can run faster and easier!

1. Breathe to Relax: Breathing through your mouth relaxes the jaw, which lessens tension throughout your body.

2. Breathe for Energy: Allow your lungs to fully expand by breathing with your diaphragm, which pushes oxygen deep into the lungs where it can enter the blood stream and is delivered to muscles.

3. Breathe with Your Cadence: Inhale fully on LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT foot strikes, then exhaling on RIGHT-LEFT foot strikes. This will better oxygenate your muscles.

Do Shoes Expire?

Do Shoes Expire? The Experts Say “Yes”!

The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends new running shoes every 300 miles. Your running shoes lose shock absorption, cushioning, and stability over time. Continuing to run in worn-out running shoes increases the stress and impact on your legs and joints, which can lead to overuse injuries.

At 150 miles, buy a new pair of shoes and start rotating them into your runs and workouts. For people who participate in cross-fit type classes, one class is equivalent to running between 5 and 10 miles worth of wear on your shoes. Doing 3 classes per week, a new pair of shoes is recommended every 3-5 months.

According to an NIH study, using multiple different styles of shoes can lead to a variation of the load applied to the musculoskeletal system and prevent running-related injuries. Therefore, it is best to be actively using two or more different kinds of shoes for your runs and workouts.

If you are close to that 150 mile mark and it is time for you to look for a new pair of shoes, it is recommended that you not automatically purchase the same exact style of shoes because your needs may have changed. As you run or participate in fitness classes, your gait will not remain static. Your weight may fluctuate, you may have a minor injury, your muscles transform, and your tissue elasticity also changes. In addition to all of these changes your body may experience, footwear technology is constantly progressing and there may be new models that will better suit your individual body and cadence. For all of these reasons, we highly recommend having a new GaitView Video Analysis and fitting before every purchase.

When in doubt, our motto is that it is ALWAYS a good time to buy a new pair of shoes!
